Style Exercise Meme - Gummy/Bernard Edition!

Woo! I’ve never finished one of these before! Feels pretty good, I gotta say.

So as you can see, I went a LITTLE over the top with it, doubling the size to fit an extra character and coloring and adding backgrounds and such… but I never liked posting “doodles” on DA, so I force a higher standard on myself, which makes things take longer, which burns my muse XD
It’s a self-destructive system, lol.

But man! Let’s see what’s going on here!
1st panel: Default
Yeah, you don’t see much of it in there, but that’s because I have plenty of other pictures up for you to see my hap-hazzard style with, so I sacrificed a bit here for the sake of a cheap, character-establishing joke : p

2nd panel: Favorite artist
So I like a few artists, like Tim Lee and other comic book people, but I thought good old Beatrix Potter would be a nice, classy, detail-oriented challenge for me. Complete with vintage telephone chair and wastecoats! The cat isn’t canon – Bernard doesn’t own one, it’s just a nod to Miss Potter’s animal-oriented children’s stories. WOW those old cartoons were beautiful… but the drawings are kind of stiff. I don’t envy their joints right now.

3rd panel: Shouju
Technically the meme said “super shouju”, but isn’t all shouju a bit extreme? There isn’t a single way to do it, so I just got the eyes right, exaggerated the features, and went crazy with the hair, lol. It can be fun to break loose… and Bernard isn’t happy about everyone looking like girls ‘cause he’s a playa, lol. It’s because my poor OC has been mistaken for one irl… which is understandable… Gummy’s design in this one was slightly based off Lord Death from Soul Eater.

4th panel: Disney!
So I had a bit of a hard time deciding how exactly to play this one, but I ended up going Tarzan/Atlantis: the Lost Empire style with Bernard and a bit of the same with a Black Couldron twist for Gummyworms. Obviously, Bernard is playing the spunky protagonist and Gummy’s playing the sinister villain. Obligatory animal sidekick not pictured.

5th panel: Realistic
This one didn’t take as long as I originally feared. I wasn’t really going for photorealism, as you can tell (because that would’ve taken a day in itself, and I’m not patient enough for that!) but I did want it to have more depth and more shades, and to lose the cartoonish element but still look natural and look like them. And the couch is supposed to be big. The giant couch is totally canon.

6th panel: Pokemon!
I watched the original cartoon way back when and grew up on the 1st gen card game, so I enjoyed this, even if the background isn’t perfect. And of course, since Bernard has yellow hair, he’s CLEARLY been born to train electric types. And Gummy is just… a cubone gone wrong, or something. Must be a 5th gen monster : p

7th panel: another Deviant’s syle
Boy did I have a hard time picking! With people like the genius behind Lackadaisycats on DA, I had a hard time! But someone else beat me to that AND I’m not good at drawing furry animals, so I went with BunnyBennet (bunnybennett.deviantart.com/). He’s the artist for the Steam Powered Giraffe webcomic (yes, the one based off the band and illustrated by one of the lead singers). But his style is so quirky and unique that I HAD to give it a try. I know it’s not perfect – I just went through his portfolio, picked different little recurring ellements, and went wild. It was fun! You should try it. It’s a fantastical journey…

8th panel: ART DECO!!!
I was supposed to tag other DA artists, buuuut… I don’t have any friends! Yet! So instead, I went with one of my personal favorite styles of all time: art deco. This is what drew me to the world of Bioshock, which is a fantastic game that you should play NOW if you haven’t, and is also one of the many reasons I wish I lived in the 20’s.
Gummy visits that time period often because of his lover, but Bernard just likes playing dress up : p SO mature…
Oh, all the golden and burgundy goodness… *gawks*

So yeah, that was Goku-chan’s style exercise meme (browse.deviantart.com/art/Styl.... I definitely recommend trying it on for size. It was so much fun! Especially with TWO OC’s. XD
